Known for his infectious energy, signature flair, and passion for fresh, regional Italian ingredients, Aldo has become a household name through his celebrated restaurants, bestselling books, and countless television appearances.
Born in the picturesque seaside town of Alba Adriatica, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, Aldo was one of nine children raised in a lively and close-knit household. His father was a priest — a man of deep faith and community standing — while his mother inspired Aldo’s lifelong love of food, teaching him the art of traditional Italian home cooking from a young age. After attending catering college in Italy, Aldo set his sights on London, bringing with him the flavours, warmth, and spirit of his Italian upbringing.
Aldo went on to become the founder and chef-patron of some of London’s most exciting and innovative restaurants, including Signor Zilli, Zilli Green, Zilli Café, Zilli Bar, and the iconic Zilli Fish, which became a Soho institution and a favourite among celebrities and food lovers for over 15 years. His inventive menus and charismatic approach helped redefine modern Italian dining in Britain.
As an author, Aldo has written 10 books, including two acclaimed autobiographies — Being Zilli and My Italian Country Childhood — along with a series of cookbooks that capture his love for simple, seasonal, and soulful food.
His exuberant personality has made him a regular on television and radio, where he appears as both presenter and chef. His extensive TV credits include Celebrity MasterChef, This Morning, The Alan Titchmarsh Show, The One Show, and Sunday Brunch, among many others. In 2019, Aldo showcased his adventurous side by taking part in and winning Celebrity Hunted for Channel 4, raising significant funds for Stand Up to Cancer.
Aldo continues to be one of the most respected figures in British gastronomy, consulting for leading restaurant groups and luxury brands, as well as mentoring the next generation of chefs. In recognition of his enduring contribution to the culinary world, Aldo was named ‘Best Chef 2022’ at the Best Restaurant Awards.
With his signature charm, passion, and deep-rooted Italian heritage, Aldo Zilli remains a true icon of good food, family, and la dolce vita.
